astrology is a pseudoscience that can be traced back to the anciet babylonians. in the past, astrology was considered a strict science, but of course, times have changed.

i've been interested in astrology ever since june (july??) of 2018. the reason i started researching astology was actually because of nia. she's a hardcore pisces yet she had little to none piscean traits, and i wanted to know why. it was a downhill spiral from there.

a little disclaimer before i start though-- i do not believe astrology is solid word. there is no solid proof that astrology is solid scientific law. i believe that astrology can help people understand themselves and the people around them. personally, i view astrology as something fun and interesting.

another note: despite popular belief, astrology is not only about the placement of the sun. there is a whole solar system is the sky! each planet-- mercury, mars, venus, jupiter, saturn, uranus, neptune, and (of course), pluto-- all are important when it comes to understaing astrology. each planet represents something, and it's placement in your chart gives you insight on many things.

anyways, lets begin with the birthchart.

the birthchart (or natal chart, whatever you wanna say) is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born, from earth's point of view. (the ancients thought that the earth was the center of the universe, and therefore built the natal chart that way.) there are four major components of the natal chart; the zodiac, the planets, aspects, and the houses.

as much as i'd love to write excruciating long paragraphs on my knowledge of each of the things listed above and what they mean, i'm going to talk about the thing all beginners find themselves with-- the "big three."

the big three are (arguably) the most important placements in your birth chart. the big three are the sun sign, the moon sign, and the ascendant (or rising). each of these things show things about you!
the sun sign (superego) is, of course, your "zodiac sign." essentially, the sun sign is where the sun was (in terms of the band of the zodiac,) when you were born. the sun sign represents the most basic things about you. the sun sign is the foundation (in a way,) of your personality. for example, some one with a leo sun (i.e: sun was in leo at the moment they were born) will be relatively outgoing and ambiverted. they'll be loyal to their friends, etc. when only reading the sun sign (this holds for really any other placement in the chart), you'll get something very vague. the moon sign (ego) is where the moon was (again, in terms of the band of the zodiac) when you were born. the moon represents your inner, deeper self. it's a very emotional planet (read: luminary. the moon isn't a planet but i dont care enough to be picky.) which represents how you feel, (and to an EXTENT) how you react to things. for example, someone with a sagittarius moon will be very thoughtful when it comes to their emotions. it's possible they'll view emotions, in general, with a philosophical eye. they probably are comforted by reading, or travel.the ascendant (id) is not a planet. the ascendant (a.k.a; asc, rising, 1st house etc.) is a house. in short, houses are represented by 12 sectors of the sky which wraps around the earth. each of these sectors represent an aspect of life. essentially, the "rising" sign is the sign that was on the horizon, where the sun rises. the placement of the houses changes about every two hours, so you must know your (general) birth time to figure out your asc. the ascendant represents your outward self. it represents how you view the world and how the world views you back. for example. someone with a virgo ascendant views the world with an analytic eye, probably wishing the world to be in a sense of order. they might be a little nit-picky, depending on the person. the rest of us would probably view someone with a virgo asc as someone very organized and clean, but they might actually be a mess. in a sense, the asc is the outer mask.
( the idea of the ego, superego, and id is not mine, but rather sigmund frued's. that is their idea and theory. )

to find your big three-- and the rest of your chart-- i recommend starting with cafeastrology. it gives you a simple table chart, instead of a circle one, which makes it much easier for beginners to view their placements. a word of warning against cafe astrology-- the information they give about each placement can be misleading. my advice is to collect information about everything from various different sources, so you get an unbiased and true idea of everything in your chart.

(another note: my explanation of the house system was absolutely Awful. look it up online, someone will explain it much better than i can.)
